President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah launched the construction of the Oute Bridge in the Kunene Region on Wednesday.

She said the  project expected to create local jobs and end years of isolation for rural communities during the rainy season.

Speaking at the  ceremony on Wednesday, Nandi-Ndaitwah said the bridge will bring “hope, safety, and progress” to the people of Etanga, Orupembe, and surrounding areas.

“The construction of the Oute Bridge represents our commitment as a government to ensure that no community is left behind. It embodies our vision of an inclusive Namibia where infrastructure serves as a bridge across divides of opportunity, access, and development,” she said.

The bridge, located about 33 kilometres northwest of Opuwo, will provide year-round access to essential services and markets, particularly during the rainy season when the Oute River cuts off District Road 3703,  a key link between Opuwo and Etanga.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said the 12-month project will also benefit local subcontractors and small businesses. “This project will create opportunities for local subcontractors and SMEs, where many labourers will be recruited locally,” she said, adding that this will help “build capacity, transfer skills, and stimulate local economies.”

She praised the Roads Authority and the Ministry of Works and Transport for their “excellence and accountability” in delivering projects that transform lives.

“The Oute Bridge will stand as a permanent reminder of what we can achieve when we put people first,” Nandi-Ndaitwa said.
