Health Minister Esperance Luvindao has ordered the immediate termination of two contractors in the Omaheke Region for failing to complete hospital projects on time, Future Media Reports..
According to Future Media, Luvindao, who is on a two-day oversight visit to the region, confronted a contractor responsible for renovating the theatre at Gobabis Hospital after the company missed five deadlines.
According to information provided to the minister, the initial theatre renovation project began in 2020 but stalled after the first contractor failed to honour contractual obligations.
A second and current contractor was appointed in April 2024; however, the company has also failed to complete the project despite an extended completion period from August 2024 to November 2025.
Similarly, a contractor appointed for the construction of the new Gobabis Hospital ICU project missed the initial completion deadline of December 2024. The deadline was later extended to December 2025, but progress targets were again not met.
The contractor on the ICU project cited personal reasons, cash-flow challenges, and issues with the Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) as causes for the delays.
Luvindao stated that the delays have serious and unacceptable consequences for patients and healthcare workers, stressing that accountability is essential to ensure timely delivery of critical health infrastructure.
