Only three corruption cases referred to Prosecutor General

The Anti-Corruption Commission of Namibia (ACC) says it has referred three corruption cases to the Prosecutor General during the 2024/25 financial year.

This is according to the ACC’s annual report released on Thursday, which shows that out of 68 corruption cases investigated during the period three were forwarded for prosecution.

ACC acting spokesperson, Marina Matundu, explained the ACC received a total of 127 cases of which 50 were declined while 10 were referred to other institutions for action.

“Case distribution, the head office had 73 cases, which is amounting to 57%. Oshana region had 16 cases amounting to 13%. Erongo, 15 cases amounting to 12%, while the north which is Kabongo East, and Zambezi had 14 cases, which is 11% out of all the cases. And Otjozondjupa received nine cases, which is now 7% of the whole number,” she said.

She added that the most reported forms of corruption are tender irregularities, abuse of power, bribery, and irregularities in recruitment.

“Abuse of power, which is 45 percent, was recorded as the most type or prevalent kind of corruption. Bribery, followed by bribery, abuse of public resources, tender and recruitment irregularities. These are the cases or type of corruption that the ACC encountered or dealt with,” she noted.

Since its inception in 2006, the ACC received 822 cases, 596 prosecuted, 415 finalised in court (256 convictions, 159 acquittals/withdrawals),183 pending, 107 declined, 5

referred to the police and 114 awaiting Prosecutor General decisions.
