Cabinet has approved the application for Namibia to become a member to the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
The Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) is a grouping of countries that aims to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons by controlling the export of materials and technologies that could be used to create them. According to the Cabinet devotions released by Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus on Thursday Cabinet directed the Ministry of International Relations and Trade to coordinate the technical updates to the dossier and to act as a focal point and to establish an Inter- Ministerial Committee tasked with implementing the NSG Guidelines.
“In addition, Cabinet further approved a delegation at Ministerial level to follow up and lobby the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Chairperson of the NSG on the margins of the General Conference in Vienna, Austria to favourably consider Namibia’s application to become a member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group,” she said.
She says Cabinet also authorised the Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy to establish a NationalIndependent Regulator and mechanisms of Safeguards-Safety and Security.
Established in 1975, it is composed of 48 participating governments that have voluntarily agreed to coordinate their export controls.
The NSG’s primary goal is to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons by regulating the transfer of nuclear-related materials, equipment, and technology to non-nuclear-weapon states.
