NSA extends Shimuafeni’s contract by six months

The Board of Directors of the Namibia Statistics Agency has extended  the contract period of Statistician General Alex Shimuafeni’s by six  months.

His tenure at the statistics agency is initially set to end on March 31 but has beed extended to 30 September .

  “All Media houses are hereby informed that the Statistician-General Alex Shimuafeni’s contract of employment will come to an end on 31 March 2026. The Statistician-General, Mr. Alex Shimuafeni was appointed to lead the NSA from 1 April 2016 until 31 March 2021. The NSA Board renewed his employment contract from 1 April 2021 until 31 March 2026,”  Board Chairperson Justus Tjituka said in a statement released on Tuesday.

Tjituka said the NSA Board decided  to extend SG’s contract from 31 March 2026 until 30 September 2026  on 14 August 2025   to ensure completion of critical projects and smooth handover.

“ In terms of Section 23 of the Statistics Act No 9 of 2011 the Board with the approval of the Director General of the National Planning Commission must appoint a suitably qualified person with knowledge and experience in Statistics, Information Technology, Economics and related fields of expertise to be the Statistician-General of the Agency,” Tjituka said.

The NSA Board Chairperson added that, “The Deputy Statistician-General, Ms. O Mwazi reached retirement age as of 31 December 2025 and the Board at the meeting held on 14 August 2025 resolved to extend her contract from 1 January 2026 until 31 March 2026 to ensure completion of critical projects and seamless transition. The recruitment process for the Deputy Statistician-General has commenced and is at an advanced stage of being concluded.” 

The NSA Board said they remain confident that the systems and processes have been set up to ensure business continuity as part of its succession planning processes.
