NAMIBIA Revenue Agency (NamRA ) has apologised for prolonged technical challenges which saw many taxpayers failing to upload their documents to the digital system to stay in good standing with the taxman.
Most Namibians flocked to beat the deadline for tax submissions last week and the rush continues this week as most taxpayers try to avoid being on the wrong side of the law.
NamRA spokesperson Tonateni Shidhudhu told Namibia Business Review on Monday that the system has normalised and called on taxpayers who have not filed their documents to do so despite the deadline lapsing.
“As communicated earlier we experienced technical challenges with the Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS) portal. AS with any digital platforms high traffic volumes can put a strain on the system and result in technical challenges. At NamRA we are taking action to rectify the system so that it can handle high volumes of traffic, shidhudhu said.
This comes after a number of taxpayers who spoke to Namibia Business Review last week and on Monday complained that they are not able to upload their documents or complete any modifications on the ITAS portal due to the slowness of the system.
Some said they are asked to leave their documents with officials to upload when the system improves.
“ In response to documents being left behind because of temporary system challenges , while this is not a generally preferred model, this has been done before and we always make sure that all documents are kept safe. We do not expect any documents to be lost.
Although the submission period has lapsed we encourage taxpayers to submit their returns timeously,” the NamRA spokesperson said.
Shidhudhu added that, “That said we would like to appeal to tax payers to avoid last minute submissions
We have seen that taxpayers receive their PAyE 5 forms early and if these are submitted it will help to reduce overcrowding.”
