Affirmative Repositioning spokesperson, George Kambala is calling for the establishment of a housing bank and urgent land reform, saying the housing crisis cannot be resolved without fixing access to finance and serviced land, Future Media Reports.
Kambala made the remarks on Tuesday in response to questions by NewsOnOne, after the National Housing Enterprise confirmed that only 58 of the 362 houses at the Otjomuise Mass Housing project in Windhoek have so far been allocated.
Kambala argued land provision should fall under local authorities, accusing some councils of outsourcing servicing land to private entities that inflate costs for profit.
He added that there is also a need for a dedicated housing bank in the country and a building society focused specifically on informal and low-income earners.
NHE spokesperson Mutonga Matali said allocation of the 362 Otjomuise houses is being done in phases, following Deeds Office verification of over 8 800 applicants, with beneficiaries chosen based on eligibility, affordability, and completed units.
