Namibia and Germany signed an agreement worth  N$103 million to support energy transition and green industrialisation.

The  agreement was signed during an introductory engagement between newly accredited German Ambassador to Namibia , Thomas Wimmer and Director General of the National Planning Commission , Kaire Mbuende.

During the meeting, the two sides signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement valued at EUR 5.5 million (approximately NAD 103 million), launching the implementation of two projects agreed during the 2025 Namibia-Germany bilateral negotiations on development cooperation held in Lüderitz.

The projects will support Namibia’s efforts to expand access to modern and sustainable energy services and to develop responsible and sustainable value chains for critical raw materials, contributing to the country’s energy transition and green industrialization objectives.

One project will assist Namibia in increasing energy access, supporting the

national target of expanding access from 59.3 percent to 70 percent by 2030.

The second project will strengthen sustainable critical raw material value chains, with a focus on local value addition, transparency and economic opportunities arising from the global energy transition.

The new projects complement ongoing cooperation in the energy sector, which has supported significant investments, including the construction or replacement of approximately 1,300 km of transmission lines and the expansion and rehabilitation of the Ruacana Hydropower Plant.

The engagement also provided an opportunity to exchange views on Namibia’s development priorities and to reflect on the positive momentum generated by the Namibian-German Strategic Dialogue held in Opuwo in September 2026.

Germany’s current development cooperation portfolio in Namibia comprises more than 50 projects implemented through KfW Development Bank, GIZ and BGR across sectors including sustainable energy, vocational training, urban development and natural resource management.

Overall, the total financial and technical support from Germany since 1990 exceeds 1.6 billion Euros (approximately N$30 billion).
