Minister of Industries,Mines and Energy Modestus Amutse has challenged electricity distributors to find an urgent solution that makes electricity affordable for Namibians from all walks of life.
Speaking at the Namibia Electricity Supply Industry Forum on Monday Amutse said electricity distributors must not be guided by keeping tariffs at cost reflective levels but must cater for Namibians from disadvantaged financial backgrounds. The Forum organised by NamPower and the Electricity Control Board was hosted under the theme :Driving Affordable Energy Through Digital Innovation, Collaboration and Investment.
Consider a parent standing at a prepaid meter with the last money remaining, that parent needs money for food, school fees and utilities, that same parent is making the decisions that are the same as we are making today. If we opt only for discontinuity , do we count the cost of the unavailability of electricity to a family, a household can be connected to the grid and live in the dark. Our responsibility does not end on the grin only but must make sure that the end user affords the power,” he said.
Amutse lauded NamPowe for continuously supplying reliable electricity to the country without plunging into load shedding that affects other African countries.
