Namibia and Angola have a power purchase agreement that will see implementation of the  Angola – Namibia Interconnector Project (ANNA).

Speaking at the ceremony on Tuesday, Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, Modestus Amutse, said the project marks an important milestone for both countries.

“It is with profound honour and great privilege that I join you today, marking the signing of the Power Purchase Agreement and the Joint Development Agreement for the Angola–Namibia Interconnector Transmission Line,” Amutse  said.

The agreements include a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) between NamPower and Angola’s electricity transmission company (RNT).

The ANNA Project will involve the construction of a high-voltage electricity interconnection, with an initial capacity of up to 500 megawatts, Amutse said, adding that it is  critical for Namibia which is faced by  growing energy demands.

“As a country with growing energy demand, securing reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity supply remains a national priority,” he said.

He added that the project will help diversify Namibia’s energy sources, reduce risks linked to supply, and support long-term economic growth.

According to the Angolan government, the project is part of its strategy to strengthen energy security and position the country as a key electricity supplier within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Amutse said that signing the agreements is only the beginning.

“Signing these agreements is merely the beginning and therefore our focus must now move to implementation,” he said.

He urged all parties involved to maintain momentum and ensure the project is delivered on time.

The ANNA Project is expected to strengthen regional integration and improve energy security for both countries, while supporting economic development across the region.
