Namibia Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Executive Director Toska Sem says the country has one of the safest airspaces in the world.

She was speaking at the Global Africa Hydrogen Summit on Thursday.

Sem said Namibia is making progress on localising regulations for the usage of sustainable aviation fuel in the future.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a low-carbon alternative to traditional jet fuel, made from renewable sources like used cooking oil, plant oils, and agricultural waste, or even from captured carbon dioxide and green hydrogen.

SAF can be blended with conventional jet fuel and used in existing aircraft and airport infrastructure as a “drop-in” fuel, reducing lifecycle CO2 emissions by up to 80%. It is a crucial component in the aviation industry’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“ We have domesticated our regulations to look at evolving techniques .The Namibian airspace is one of the safest in the world. We are basically saying from a legal perspective  we have   drafted an action plan which has been submitted to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICA)  on sustainable aviation,” she said.

International Civil Aviation Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations that coordinates the principles and techniques of international air navigation, and fosters the planning and development of international air transport to ensure safe and orderly growth.

Sem added that, “ From a regional perspective Namibia serves as the vice president and is discussing how Sadc can harmonise the usage of fuel and hydrogen . There are three fundamental issues that affect your environment and are supported by economic issues,” .
