NamPower plans to invest approximately N$7 billion in generation projects over the next five years and N$9 billion on transmission infrastructure projects over the same period, Managing Director Kahenge Haulofu says.
Speaking to Namibia Business Review Haulofu said the company is reviewing the five-year strategy and expects that these numbers may vary slightly with the final outcome of that review. The projects include the 40 megawatt (MW) Otjikoto Biomass project which will cost N$ 2.64 billion, the 100MW Sores |Gaib Solar PV Plant which will cost N$ 1.6 billion, the 45MW/ 90MWh Lithops BESS which will cost N$ 665 million and the 80MW Omburu Solar PV which will cost N$ 1.3 billion.

The other projects include the 54MW/54MWh Omburu BESS N$ 570 million.
Haulofu said significant progress has been made with the development and construction of the Generation Projects forming part of the Integrated Strategy and Business Plan for period 2020 – 2025.

“ The 54MW Anixas II Power Project which was under construction formally achieved taking over in November 2024 and is currently in operation. The total installed capacity at the HFO/diesel fired Anixas Power Station has thus increased to 76.5MW following completion of the Anixas II Power Project.
“ 40MW Otjikoto Biomass Power Project: NamPower Board made a final investment decision to continue with the Project which culminated in the award of bid for the Construction of the Power Station to Dongfang International Electric Corporation and signing of the EPC Contract on 24 May 2024. NamPower also awarded a bid and signed Fuel Supply Agreement with 4 suppliers for the supply of up to 180 000 tonnes of wood chips on 24 May 2024. The EPC contract has since become effective and the time for completion commences on 23 September 2024,” Haulofu said.
He said NamPower has signed the EPC Contract with SDEE/NARADA JV in December 2023 for the construction of the Battery Energy Storage System.

“The EPC Contractor made significant strides in the design and construction of the containerised battery module and power conversion system. NamPower will conduct factory acceptance testing of the battery system in July 2025 to allow the equipment to be shipped to the Project site by September 2025. NamPower expects construction to be completed and the power plant to be taken over by December 2025,” he said.
