The Chinese Business community in Namibia have spent N$200 million in corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes in various fields that uplift communities and local procurement.
The expenditure is broken down in half, with N$100 million being spent in procurement services locally while another N$100 million was spent on CSR.
According to the report compiled by the business community operating in Namibia to mark 35 years of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries , Chinese owned businesses operating in the country have contributed about N$100 million to treasury through taxation between 2020 and 2024.
The report also shows that the Chinese community has spent about N$100 million enhancing workers safety in the various fields that they operate in. The Chinese are major players in Namibia’s uranium mining operations and dominate the country’s construction industry.They have been in the forefront of constructing most of the government projects including public buildings and roads in the past decades.
The report also shows that the number of Namibians employed by the Chinese business community has swelled from 7663 in 2020 to 10 515 by the end of last year.
Most of the workers are absorbed in their construction projects as well as the uranium mining industry.
In the report the community said, “ We uphold fair employment practices offering equal job opportunities and development to citizens of all genders and backgrounds, while ensuring a safe work environment where workers can grow and acquire new skills. SWe actively engage communities in care initiatives and support disadvantaged groups and contribute to creating an inclusive society.”
The community also said they prioritise local procurement primarily targeting Namibian Small to Medium Scale Enterprises.
The report also said the Chinese community pride themselves for introducing the latest industrial technology and improving output in their operations.
